A Grief Observed
By C. S. Lewis
see related
"Not that I am (I think) in much danger of ceasing to believe in God.  The real danger is of coming to believe such dreadful things about Him.  The conclusion I dread is not, 'So there's no God after all,' but, 'So this is what God's like.  Deceive yourself no longer.'"

                                                                                    -C.S. Lewis
                                                                                      A Grief Observed

-------------------

About once a month, I get into a "theological" mood.  During my theological periods, I search through Bible verses as if they hold the key to all of life's answers.  I hunger for verses of encouragement, insight, and love.  "I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord","The mountains melt like wax before the Lord","My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my savior!"--rich soil to my soul!

Then I come on verses that shake me to the core, verses that make me feel confused and hurt.  Verses that bring more questions I did not feel needed to be asked.  "And the LORD was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. 7So the LORD said, 'I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.'"  "I will turn my hand against you
and will smelt away your dross as with lye
   and remove all your alloy."

Is it alright to be afraid of God?  Is it alright to question Him and lose faith in Him?  Is it alright to not want to find out more about God in fear that you might find something you don't like?  But then sometimes, I find these verses comforting because it shows a God with character and feeling.  A God who feels with you.  But if I truly believe that God's will is always good, can I justify my worry?  I believe the we tend to forget some of the most important verses and the most comforting..."In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." and  20He who testifies to these things says, "Surely I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

21The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.

"You must fear your God; I am the LORD." Lev 19.14
I think it okay to question so your faith becomes real to you and not just something your parents believe but that doesn't have to mean having no faith.
"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for, being convinced of what we do not see." Heb 11.1
I really miss you.

Yeah....when I read verses that are scarry and confusing, I realize how small my understanding of God is. It's hard to understand that God is glorified in showing justice and righteouse wrath just as much as He is glorified in showing mercy. But just as we savor Him for the mercy He has for us, we also ought to savor Him for His righteous judgments, which reflect His holiness and purity.

Ah, the "theological mood".... Just gotta love it.

Is it alright to be afraid of God?
Of course! He Who spoke infinity into existence and can blot it from existence with a single word is certainly to be feared.
But it is the fear that accompanies deep respect, not the fear of terror, that He desires.

Is it alright to question Him and lose faith in Him?
It's okay to doubt God -- John the Baptist did it, too. But in your doubting, in your searching for answers, look to Him for the solution. He may be beyond comprehension, beyond searching out, but those who put their faith in Him despite and because of His incomprehensibility will always and finally be vindicated.

Is it alright to not want to find out more about God in fear that you might find something you don't like?
It's scary. I've been there. But if you think about it, it's silly. Either He is good, in which case we should search Him out and slay doubt, or He is evil, in which case we are doomed whether we know it or not. Never stop searching for fear of what you will find. Search honestly for the truth, and Truth will free you from doubt. It's difficult to fight the current, but nothing exceeds the triumph of reaching the far shore. What meaning is there in a battleless victory?

The Lord be with you, brother.

ok i know u dont no me...but i use your awesome layouts...thanks by the way...
anyhow...it's ok to fear God...you're supposed to. he created everything and has the power to destroy anything.
i honestly dont know if it is ok to question Him...but i assume that it isn't ok...only because he is The Almighty Omega and doubting him is believing in something else... but on the other hand he always forgives us of our sins.just remember that God is the way, the truth, and the light.

but that is only my thought on the topic...
comment back if u want...if not thats cool too.

I am often surprised and always moved and proud when I read your posts. Let me tell you that it is okay to question God. Truly, the truth can stand up to whatever questioning any of us can think up. When we consider the works of God and when we look at the world around us, any thinking person must come to some essential questions. "Is God sovereign?" If so, and He is in control of all things, then, "Is God good?" Ah! There is the conundrum. If he is all powerful and all good, then why are there bad things? Well, as we've talked before, much of that comes from our definition of bad.

God is good and wants good for us. I think, though, it is difficult (perhaps impossible) to believe that without putting it to the test, questioning it, if you will. So ask. Seek. Knock. (Hmmm...that sounds scriptural, huh?).

God is faithful, and His mercies are renewed every morning. "Great is Your faithfulness, O Lord! Great is Your faithfulness!"

hey haden,

it is nice to see that im not the only one having problems like that and that is alot of important things to think about that go through mind and race around over and over and give you a feeling in your stomach but then you find the comforting verse such as  Mark 6:50 "They were all terrified when they saw him. But Jesus spoke to them at once."it;s all right," he said."I am here! Don't be afraid."

well that one meant alot to me when i found out something and it really upset me and that was the first thing i saw.

by the way are you going to be a nehi?

simce u aren't commenting or posting, i shall give my opinion on the matter. it is good to fear God, not just as in respect but to fear his wrath. even after the ressurection people died on the spot for disobeying God's commands through the church. that doesn't really happen anymore cuz today's church leaders are wimps compared to those of the early church. i'll finish this later.
